KOSMOS Workshop "Emerging Synchronization in Music Cognition"

September 27-30, 2017

Synchronization is an emerging topic in the sciences and the humanities. The workshop builds upon the integrative potential of synchronization and aims to sharpen and to enrich existing paradigms of synchronization in a cross-disciplinary perspective. The workshop draws upon recent research on music-based, non-verbal synchronizations. Special attention will be given to the dynamics and multi-dimensionality of synchronizing processes. Thus, the prevailing functional, operative and cognitive view on synchronization shall be complemented by the affective, biogenic, evaluative and multi-modal dimensions of synchronization.

KOSMOS Dialogue "Music, Emotion, and Visual Imagery"

June 1-3, 2017

Music can elicit powerful emotional reactions in the listener that are often accompanied by visual imagery (e.g., landscapes, friends, scenes of past events, colours, abstract shapes etc.). The aim of this KOSMOS Dialogue is to contextualize the research topic within broader currents of the cognitive sciences and humanities by bringing together researchers from different fields to map out interdisciplinary links and to elaborate paradigms, techniques and methods to be able to study the relationships between music, emotion, and visual imagery. Proposals for research reports and short position statements will be welcomed from researchers in any discipline from the sciences, social sciences or humanities that may be able to shed light on the ways in which music and visual imagery interact in creating an affective response.

Music's Pluralistic Potential - International symposium in memoriam Christian Kaden, April 27 - 30, 2017

Symposium Language: English

Through the topic of pluralisations, the symposium engages a key ethical concern of the music sociologist Christian Kaden (1946-2015) who held the chair of music sociology and social history of music at Humboldt Universität from 1993 to 2012. Against the dispositif of modern rationalization, Christian Kaden throught to strengthen embodiment and plural actors (the Muses) vis-á-vis re-presentation, communicative feed-back against monodirectional authoritarian structures, complementarity vis-á-vis dominance. He generally regarded pluralisms as a vital and socially stimulating feature and rewarding form of experience. This was not aiming at levelling any tensions. On the contrary, Kaden explored conflicting musico-social situations in the sense of Greek harmonia which was a means to negotiate tensions.
