Our presentations can be described by the following sentences:
In the early 1990s, Michael Hauben discovered the emergence of the
netizens, users who saw the Net as a new social commons that they wanted
to spread. They were carrying out JCR Licklider's vision of a
collaborative, interactive network.
Licklider was most profoundly a psychologist concerned with human
behavior and the human brain. His writings raise some questions:
Human-computer symbiosis, what could that mean? Is the Internet more a
social technology than an electronic technology? Can enhanced
communication change politics? Jay Hauben will relate these to the
concept of netizen and ask you for your opinions.
Ronda Hauben will discuss how that vision is still inspiring important online and offline developments today as in the recent 100 day Candlelight demonstrations in South Korea.
