Mind and media have a long-standing relationship. As media provide conceptual metaphors and analytical tools for an understanding of mind, in turn biological mind experiences a genuine extension and re-calibration via technical media. What are the historical and biological conditions for such a mind-media coupling? How does such a bionic relation exactly function?
To answer these questions, I will combine cognitive sciences with cinema and media theory by reassessing the epistemological notion of “dispositif”. In doing so, I will outline an archaeology of Western “mind” by tracing neglected genealogies of past, present and imaginary media of tele-presence.
