An attempt to media-archaeologically analyze and problematize project Cybersyn —the telecommunications network and processing system developed by Stafford Beer and his team in the early 1970s in Chile to cybernetically manage its economy—, can be deployed under three interconnected movements. This lecture will tackle the first of those; namely, Encode. Through that, an examination on the project's early processes of flowcharting of production systems, definition of indicators, and collection of data will be developed, in order to identify and discuss the possible frictions that would have arisen between the implementation of the techniques and technologies that served such processes, and the real concrete production activities that these processes sought to model and quantify in the factories that the project connected to its network.
