Musical Personae Revisited

Over ten years ago, I argued in "Musical Personae" (2006) that the way musicians perform is better understood as a form of self-presentation as theorized by Erving Goffman than in theatrical terms. Although I stand by my position, there are two aspects of this argument I wish to revisit. The first is my having drawn too bright a line between what actors do and what musicians do, and therefore too bright a line between acting and self-presentation. The second is that because I tie the concept of musical persona tightly to the concept of musical genre, it may seem that I posit such personae as monolithic rather than multi-vocal, an impression I now wish to correct.
