Listening to Latin America in Los Angeles: Music, Immigration, and the 20th Century City

How do we listen to cities? How does the musical history of a city reveal histories of marginalization, displacement, cultural change, and community place-making? This talk builds on years of research into the racial and cultural politics of musical urbanism with a focus on Los Angeles and the greater Mexico-California borderlands. Specifically I will discuss my recent research study of Latin American immigrant music and musicians on the shaping of music and the music industry in Los Angeles that was paired with a city-wide concert series (in partnership with the Getty Foundation’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA). My talk will also attempt to draw larger conclusions about how these histories connect with music and contemporary migrant and refugee politics in Berlin and Europe more broadly.
