Bio:
Raviv Ganchrow researches the interdependencies of sound, locale, and hearing in dynamic circuits such as ocean acoustics, environmental infrasound, telluric currents and radio transmissions and focuses on the spatial operations and contextual interplay of manifest sounds. His ongoing project Whale Refractions, commenced at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg inherit (2024-25), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, addresses gaps between the historicity of sense perceptions and natural histories of sensory physiology through the example of mammalian adaptations to spatial hearing and sounding underwater. His practice-based approach includes residencies at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, commissioned radio works for national broadcasters (ORF, Deutschlandfunk Kultur) as well as site & context specific sound installations at numerous international festivals (Sonic Acts, Tuned City, TSONAMI Sound Art Festival, La Biennale di Venezia, Kontraste) and exhibitions (Ballroom Marfa, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, ZK/U, Dům umění and Slought gallery). He publishes, workshops, and lectures broadly on auditory contexts and sonic agency and is currently faculty at the Institute of Sonology, The Hague and Visiting Scholar at the Department of Transcultural Musicology, Institute of Musicology, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Ganchrow received a doctorate from Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), at the Borders & Territories research group (with the dissertation ‘Sound Operation Circuit: Terrestrial Oscillations and Dynamics of the Expanse’), his MSon degree from the Institute of Sonology, University of the Arts, The Hague (developing phased-array audio techniques) and a Bachelor of Architecture from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York (thesis on sonic architecture).
