      • 19/01/2024, Sydney Hutchinson gave a talk at the Séminaire du CREM (Centre de recherche en ethnomusicologie) at Université Paris Nanterre on: "New social dances for a new socialist life: East German experiments on the dance floor, 1951-1976".
      • 10/11 & 11/11/2023, Musical Belonging '2 Lautten Compagney Berlin meets Music for Latin America at Humboldt Forum. Sydney Hutchinson will take part in the panel discussion following the concert.
      • 08/03/2023, Penelope Braune was a guest on Deutschlandfunk Kultur's program "Tonart am Nachmittag" and spoke about "Frauen im HipHop: Heilige, Hure, Macherin?" Link to listen.

      • 24/02/2023, Hans Christian Hagedorn of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain) published the article “Don Quixote’s Adventures in the World of Jazz: 200 Examples and a Few Remarks” in the Spanish journal Anales Cervantinos (no. 54, 2022: 101-173). He finished work on this article while in residence at the Institute for Musicology and Media Studies, May-July 2022, as a guest researcher at the Research Center for Popular Music, at the invitation of Professor Mark J. Butler. The article, written in English, is open access: DOI: https://doi.org/10.3989/anacervantinos.2022.005. An announcement has been published recently in All About Jazz. Playlists are on YouTube and Spotify; an abridged playlist under the title “Don Quixote’s Selected Adventures in the World of Jazz” is also on Spotify.

      • On February 20, 2023, Mark Butler was an invited guest speaker for the course "The Minimalist Impulse" at Dartmouth College (New Hampshire, USA), instructor Dr. Victoria Aschheim.
      • 9/2/2023, Mark J. Butler gave a workshop for PhD students at the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Analysis (NICA). He then gave a talk on "Reimagining the Past, Envisioning the Future, from a New Center" to IASPM Benelux, the AMSTERDANCE Research Group, and the Department of Musicology at the University of Amsterdam. This was part of the Amsterdance Colloquium at the University of Amsterdam.
      • 25/11/2022, Mark J. Butler gave a Keynote titled "Reimagining the Past, Envisioning the Future, from a New Center" at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna. This Keynote was part of the PopNet Austria symposium.
      • 10/2022, Penelope Braune was re-elected to the Executive Committee of IASPM D-A-CH (International Association for the Study of Popular Music Deutschland-Österreich-Schweiz).
      • Sydney Hutchinson curated a new album featuring music shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti for Pantopia Records. The album, titled Música de la Isla, features the work of Dominican percussionist/composer/organologist Edis Sánchez and can be heard here.
      • Sydney Hutchinsons article "Norteño corporeality: Body, gender, sound, and economy in commercialized norteño music videos" has been published in Popular Music and Society and is open access, thanks to support from Humboldt University.
      • Sydney Hutchinson gave an invited talk via Zoom at the National Gugak Center in Seoul titled, “A tale of two Germanys: Music and music collections across borders during German separation.” It occured on Dec. 22, 2021 as part of the conference, “North Korean music library in the National Gugak Center and prospects for its use.”
      • Dr. Hutchinson participated in a roundtable entitled “Choreomusical research perspectives“ as part of the Society for Ethnomusicology's annual conference, held online October 28.

      • 8/10/2021, Sydney Hutchinson gave a paper titled “Erinnerungskultur oder Vergessenskultur? Music, memory, and monuments in the Dominican Republic” as part of the International Council for Traditional Music – Deutschland meeting in the Humboldt Forum on October 8, 2021.

      • 6/10/2021, Sydney Hutchinson gave an invited lecture-demonstration titled “Saturnalia: On music, translation, and Rita Indiana’s Made in Saturn” as part of the IV International Trayectorias Meeting at the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences.

      • 23/07/2021, Stefanie Alisch hosts research workshop "Sound System Epistemologies" with Penelope Braune, Eugenia Seriakov, Harry Edwards, Franz Hanemann and Carl Lange.

DOI: 10.1080/07494467.2020.1863004. Mit Förderung des Open Access Publication Fund der Humboldt Universität zu Berlin wird der Artikel Open Access zur Verfügung gestellt.

      • Sydney Hutchinson published two articles in the latest issue of The World of Music (New Series). The articles are "Beyond the binary of choreomusicology: Moving from ethnotheory towards local ontologies" (with Made Mantle Hood) and "Dancing lo típico: A choreomusical perspective on merengue."

      • 12/2020, Stefanie Alisch spricht mit Christoph Möller in der Deutschlandfunk-Sendung „Tonart“ über das Thema: "Rückblick 2020: Das große Disco-Revival".

      • 12/2020, Stefanie Alisch eröffnet die MASSmcr Lecture Series zum Thema Sound System mit dem Vortrag: "Towards an Epistemology of Sound Systems - Knowledge of Kuduro’s interactive vocal practice Animação".
      • Der Masterand des Lehrstuhls Populäre Musik Ilgaz Yalcinoglu (Istanbul/Berlin) gewann den DAAD-Preis der HU Berlin. Mit dem Preis werden seine hervorragenden Studienleistungen gewürdigt. Diese hat er belegt durch die Hausarbeit "Popularisierung eines afrikanischen Genres - Raï im globalen Musikmarkt". Der Preis zeichnet weiterhin Herrn Yalcinoglus Engagement für die LGBTIQ*-Bewegung in der Türkei und für Antidiskriminierung und Diversität in der Kulturlandschaft Berlins aus. Hier ist er mit der studentischen Gruppe Interflugs und mit der musikalischen Veranstaltungsreihe Dümtek aktiv.

      • 11/2020, Master-Absolvent Sebastian Franke stellt im YouTube-Kanal HISTORY OF BERLIN seine Forschung zum Thema Berliner Hip Hop von 1980 bis 1989 und seine Masterarbeit "Die Vergessene Generation" vor (Cyber Dialog Nr. 1, Nr. 2, Nr. 3, Nr. 4).
      • 11/2020, Shanti Suki Osman spricht als Gastrednerin bei der Sound Arts Visiting Practitioner Lecture Series des London College of Communication/CRiSAP.
      • 11/2020, Lehrstuhlvertreterin Stefanie Alisch wird von der Band Von Wegen Lisbeth als akademische Expertin eingeladen, um  die Frage zu beantworten "Warum spielen Frauen nicht in Bands?" Ja, die Frage ist so falsch gestellt. Wir haben uns lieber als Gruppe aus Studierenden und Mitarbeiterinnen des Lehrstuhls für Theorie und Geschichte der populären Musik zusammengefunden, um breit zu diskutieren, wie populäre Musik und Gender zusammenhängen. Wir sind besonders stolz darauf, wie klar die Studierenden sich dazu artikulieren!       • 3/2020, Sydney Hutchinson published her translation of Rita Indiana’s acclaimed novel Made in Saturn, which has received praise in the Wall Street Journal, Kirkus Reviews, and the Financial Times.
      • 3/2020, Stefanie Alisch reist auf die kapverdianischen Inseln Santiago, Santo Antão, São Vicente und São Nicolau. Sie forscht forscht dort in Archiven und ethnographisch zu Mazurka im atlantischen Raum.
      • Sydney Hutchinson’s multiyear project titled Second World Music: Latin America, East Germany, and the Sonic Circuitry of Socialism was funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. It will be hosted by the Institut für Musikwissenschaft und Medienwissenschaft, to begin in October 2021.
      • 11/2019, Sydney Hutchinson published the textbook Focus: Music of the Caribbean in Routledge’s Focus on World Music series.
      • Das Buch "Sound und Sexismus" von L.J. Müller, Doktorandin bei Prof. em. Peter Wicke, hat den internationalen Buchpreis 2019 der International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM) gewonnen.
