Introduction

This lecture series, co-organized by the Department of Media Sciences at Humboldt University of Berlin, and the Department of Philosophy and History of Literature, Science and Technology at the Technical University of Berlin, aims to trace the (techno+) epistemological, aesthetic, ontological, historical and/or political frictions that the mate(real)izations of cybernetic systems may offer to analyze the scope, the influence, and thus, the success and failure of cybernetics, in attention to the specific cultural and social contexts in which the application of particular case studies have been attempted.

Thus, through five sessions and five different case studies, the discussion will try to inquire into the variables that, by defining or surrounding the human-machine couplings these cases may constitute, or be constituted of, also show the conflicts that might delineate the reasons behind the apparently always noisy attempts for bringing cybernetic systems into full and successful application.

In other words, the question will imply to discuss if, considering the human-machine coupling as the core and hinge of any cybernetic system, the factors that may have truncated the historical deployment of cybernetics remain intrinsic to such core, are external to it, or respond to the articulating quality of such hinge. And even though the works to be presented during the sessions will not necessarily arrive to conclusive answers to this question, they will indeed shed light on an issue which could well help defining the historical position and character of cybernetics.

The series will take place in Berlin, both in Humboldt University and the Einstein Center Digital Future, during Winter Semester 2019/2020. Attendance is free, and does not require registration.

Lecture:

Die Aktualisierung kybernetischen Lernens: Der Modellrechner des Instituts für Kybernetik im Signallabor der Medienwissenschaft.

Abstract:

Lecture:

Der Varietätsbegriff in der Theorie und Praxis W. Ross Ashbys

Abstract:

Lecture:

Dreams and Machines of a Cybernetic Pedagogy

Abstract:

One of the major figures of German cybernetics, Helmar Frank envisioned and propagated a "cybernetic pedagogy" which employed the use of so called teaching machines. Despite the backing of computer-industry-heavyweight Heinz Nixdorf, Frank's attempts to establish a cybernetic pedagogy utilizing teaching machines faltered. The talk attempts to showcase some of Frank's machines and to position them in a wider discourse of teaching machines of the 1960s and 70s and the surrounding pedagogical discourse in order to pinpoint the frictions and problems Frank's ideas and machines faced and what led to their demise.

Social Supercomputing und futurischer Druck. Die vergangene Zukunft der FutureICT EU-Flagship Initiative

Abstract:

Lecture:

Encoding from/to the real: On Cybersyn’s symbolic politics of transmission

Abstract:

An attempt to media-archaeologically analyze and problematize project Cybersyn —the telecommunications network and processing system developed by Stafford Beer and his team in the early 1970s in Chile to cybernetically manage its economy—, can be deployed under three interconnected movements. This lecture will tackle the first of those; namely, Encode. Through that, an examination on the project's early processes of flowcharting of production systems, definition of indicators, and collection of data will be developed, in order to identify and discuss the possible frictions that would have arisen between the implementation of the techniques and technologies that served such processes, and the real concrete production activities that these processes sought to model and quantify in the factories that the project connected to its network.
