The university is occupying a new and unfamiliar place in our societies. Where once it was understood as distant from everyday life, increasingly it has become part a crucial of the political economy of modern states educational and industrial policies. As as a result Bill Readings famously described the university as being “in ruins”, having lost a sense of itself indeed its own sense of an idea.
However, we now live under conditions of time-critical media, where the digital economy becomes more important and the traditional research and teaching role allocated to the university becomes questioned. In this talk, I seek to provide a genealogy that maps the changes in the sets of concepts and affects that were bound together at particular historical junctures to declare an “idea of a university”. My particular aim is to explore the idea of an idea of a university, that is, to think about why individuals were drawn to reflect on the questions raised by an institution of higher learning. And then to examine what the ends of such an institution could and should be under the conditions of time-critical media.
